What Does a Booster Expansion Tank Do?

Pressurized tanks used for pressurizing liquids or gases are called expansion tanks . It is also called pressure tank, expansion tank, balance tank.

Expansion tanks are closed containers that hold liquids at a pressure different from ambient pressure. They are used in pressure boosting and boiler systems.

How Does an Expansion Tank Work?

The typical domestic use of an expansion tank is in a water system connected to a pump. When the pump runs, the pressure inside the tank increases. When the tank is full and the pump reaches the upper pressure setting, the pump shuts off.

As water is drawn from the system, the air pressure around the membrane pushes water out of the vessel and into the piping system. The minimum pressure is reached when the membrane is completely deflated.

At this point, the pump starts from its low setting and the pumping cycle continues until the upper pressure is reached.

The expansion tank’s ability to hold pressurized water allows the pump to run intermittently for short periods of time rather than continuously throughout the day.

For example, if someone is going to wash their hands, the water initially comes from the expansion tank. The pump will only need to be activated when pressurized water from the tank is used, i.e. when the water in the tank runs out.

Where Are Expansion Tanks Used?

Expansion tanks are used in various applications in both industry and the private sector. In these sectors they are used as industrial compressed air receivers and as domestic water storage tanks. Other examples of expansion tanks,

  • diving cylinders,
  • recompression chambers,
  • distillation towers
  • pressure reactors,

autoclaves and used in mining activities. Many other containers are also used in oil refineries and petrochemical plants, nuclear reactor containers, air brake reservoirs in submarines, rail and road vehicles, and spaceship habitats, pneumatic reservoirs, hydraulic reservoirs.

But in general;

  • Water supply systems,
  • Washing systems,
  • Pressure systems,
  • Irrigation pumps,
  • Fluid transfer,
  • Solar and pressure retention systems
  • Used in hot water systems.

They are used in high-rise buildings, especially in the construction of detailed information on booster pumps for use where water pressure is insufficient.

How to Calculate a Pressure Tank?

When specifying an expansion tank for a system, there are several details to consider depending on the need. The most important ones are

  • Temperature of the liquid – If the liquid is hot, an Explosion Proof Expansion Tank should be used.
  • Liquid type – a normal expansion tank if it is drinking water,
  • Stainless Expansion Tanks can be used in industrial kitchens, where food is produced, where hygiene is important or in very humid environments.
  • Tank size – Depending on the characteristics of the pump system, expansion tanks can be found in different sizes. Starting from 2 liters up to 2000 liters. These tanks are also available in sphere, cylinder, horizontal and vertical types.

On average, pressure vessels last about 5-7 years. The membrane is usually the first part to be damaged. When the membrane ruptures, the tank cannot produce compressed air to act as a buffer. While the system continues to operate, it will behave as if there is no expansion tank.

How to Adjust Closed Expansion Tank Pressure?

The expansion tank pressure adjustment is usually made via the pressure switch in the booster groups. The protection cover outside the pressure switch is opened.

Two screws, one spring-loaded and the other threaded, are seen outside the cable connections. The spring screw is used to adjust Halt, the lower pressure value, and the other is used to adjust Hüst, the upper pressure value. If you keep the Halt and Hust values very close to each other, the booster can constantly throw the switch while running.

A pressure difference of at least 2 bar is recommended. To make the adjustment, cut off the water supply to the installation and wait for the pressure to drop to the value you want to adjust. You can read the pressure from the pressure gauge on the booster.

For example, you want it to activate at 3 Bar. Open a tap and wait until the pressure drops to 3 Bar. When it drops to 3 bar, close the tap. Start the booster by slowly tightening or loosening the Halt screw.

Stop tightening or loosening when the booster starts. We’ve adjusted the halt. We will use the other screw for the hust.
Open the water inlet. The pressure will rise to 5 bar. In this case, your booster will not work because we have set the Halti to 3 bar.

Now unscrew the Hust screw with a check pen (be careful not to get electrocuted. Use a plastic-coated screwdriver or a control pen.

Do not touch the cables with your hand) tighten or loosen to the point where the booster will operate. With the operation of the booster, the pressure will rise above 5 bar. If you tighten the screw a little more, you will ensure that the pressure is set below 5 bar.

The booster should not operate when there is water in the city network. Turn off the city network and open a faucet to reduce the pressure and allow the booster to be activated and check at what bar it will stop. If it does not stop at the desired value, tighten or loosen it a little more and make it stop at 4.5-5 Bar.

The pressure values exemplified above are given as average. These ratios vary according to the number of floors of the building. You can find the correct values by trial and error.

Another issue is that sometimes when the tank is deflated it can lead to pressure losses. You can fill the tank with a simple bicycle pump. In addition, the air in the expansion tank should be checked every 6 months.
