What is a Submersible Septic Pump?
The septic submersible pump provides a solution to the problem caused by the problematic operation of waste water and sewage drains in a short time.

In homes and businesses, sewage systems work according to gravity. Sewage flows downhill, into the municipal sewer line or into a septic tank.
However, in places such as villages and towns, sewage lines are laid from the basement of the dwellings and septic tanks, i.e. cesspools, are located outdoors.
In cesspools, gravity is of little importance. Septic pumps, a type of submersible pump, are used in such places. Septic pumps are also known as sewage pumps.
Septic submersible pumps are pumps used to transfer sewage liquids and solids from one place to another.
The septic pump is also called drainage submersible pump, as most of the time it is submerged in water. The septic submersible pump can be automatic, manual or dual mode. The operating mode can be adjusted with a float system as I have previously described for drainage pumps.
Septic pumps are specially designed centrifugal pumps that allow solids to pass through the pump without clogging it. When the pump is switched on, the motor starts to rotate the impeller and creates pressure that pushes water up the impeller and into the discharge pipe.
The sewage pump is powered by an electric cable. Depending on the model, the voltage can be three-phase and monophase. The pump body including motor and impeller is made of cast iron and is built for long-term use.
Types of Septic Pumps
Septic pumps are divided into 3 types in terms of structure and operation.
- Septic pumps with grinder
- Blade septic pumps
- Septic pumps with grinder and blades
In addition to these, there are also septic pumps with floater and septic pumps without floater.
How to Choose a Septic Pump?
Before choosing a septic pump, you need to answer the following questions.
- Where will I use the septic pump? What are its dimensions?
- Considering the dimensions of the cesspool, automatic and manual use, will it be with or without a float?
- Do I need to use a knife for the particles of my septic waste (napkins, pads, cloths etc. in the waste water)?
- How many meters away will I evacuate (mss)?
- How much liquid will I transfer per hour (m3/4)?
- Electrician monophase me triphase me?
With the answers to these questions, you can easily make the septic pump selection process.
How Does a Submersible Septic Pump Work?
In general, the operation of submersible septic pumps consists of two stages;
- When the pump starts to run, the motor starts to rotate the impeller.
- The pressure pushes the water from the impeller into the discharge pipe.
Submersible septic pumps can vary in the way they work depending on the model of the pump.
- In septic pumps with blades, the blades cut the solid particles and mix them into the water.
- In submersible pumps with float switches, the pump starts when the water reaches a certain level and shuts off when it stays below the level. Click here for wc grinder pump prices.
- For manual use, you have to turn the pump on and off yourself.
How to Install Septic Drainage Submersible Pump?
Follow the steps below for Septic Pump Installation;
- Choose a hose suitable for the pump water outlet .
- Have the pump electrical connection made by an electrician or a qualified electrician.
- When making the pump electrical connection, the ground line must be connected.
- Never run the pump without water.
- Never let the pump hang from the power cable! Use a suspension rope.
- Never touch the pump and water while the pump is running .
- Be careful not to break the water hose while the pump is running .
- Do not use the pump in liquids such as acid, olive oil, petroleum, etc. Do not draw sandy, gravelly and muddy water.
- Do not operate the pump if the water freezes during winter months .
- Do not operate the pump at low voltages.
- Use the pump for clean water supply.
Flow and Pressure Calculation for Septic Submersible Pump Selection
Flow rate is the volume of fluid passing per unit time. It is expressed in cubic meters per hour (m³/hour) or liters per second (lt/sec).
Estimated Flow
Units based on 1 apartment: 1 wc, 1 bathtub, 1 shower, 1 sink, 1 sink, 1 washing machine, 1 dishwasher
Number of Flats | Flow |
---|---|
1 apartment( 1 to 3 persons) | 2,5 m³/ hour |
2 apartments( 4 to 6 persons) | 5 m³/ hour |
4 apartments( 7 to 9 people) | 10 m³/ hour |
6 apartments( 10 to 12 people) | 15 m³/ hour |
Calculation of Total Manometric Height(Hm)
The manometric height or head (hm) is the pressure provided between the suction point and the discharge point.
Hm=H+Hv H= Head Height, expressed in (m). Hv = Total pressure loss, expressed in mSS.
2 Type Pressure Loss
Pipe friction loss: Pressure loss due to friction of the fluid in the pipe,
Fittings Resistance Loss: Loss due to elbows, check valves, valves and similar elements.
These pressure losses are added to the head (H) to determine the total manometric head (Hm).
To obtain the total pressure loss, the total length of the discharge line is multiplied by the appropriate value in the table below.
